John and Morgan Popple started The Bagel Jar in 2020 when they couldn’t find any fresh bagels in the southtowns of Buffalo. John, an Architect, and Morgan, a High School Computer Science Teacher, had always had a dream of starting a business, and after making some delicious homemade bagels, they decided to try and start a small bagel business on the side.

In August 2020, they started selling bagels at the Hamburg Farmers Market and quickly began selling out. Their home kitchen production soon became too small, so they found a shared commercial kitchen space to rent at the Broadway Market. The Broadway Market allowed them to expand their production, hone their craft, and begin selling year-round.

In 2021, they partnered with Public Espresso + Coffee, moving into their Seneca Street Cafe. This partnership allowed the Popples to expand their production even further and began selling bagels on a daily basis.

In January 2023, they opened their first storefront in the Tops Plaza in Derby (6940 Erie Rd, Derby, NY). As members of the community, they were excited to offer a new dining option in their neighborhood. They expanded their offerings to sandwiches and hand-crafted espresso drinks and were blown away by the outpouring of support by the community.

In September 2024, they opened a second location in the Village of Hamburg. They are excited to have the opportunity to have a permanent location in the town that first fell in love with their bagels.
